Back to School Bash
The first Saturday in August is the perfect time to host the “Back to School Bash.” Also known as the “Stuff the Bus” project, this is an organized event to collect extra school supplies. A cash donation of $15 may also be provided to purchase items and backpacks. In addition, local churches and businesses collect items and bring them to the Ministry Center at 511 Municipal Drive. Volunteers work to sort and organize the supplies in order to stuff backpacks full of goodies. These backpacks are handed out to school age residents of Jefferson, Grainger and Cocke County. A similar organization called “Food on Foot” serves residents in Hamblen County. Appalachian Outreach sponsors this drive in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club as well as Team Dad and Americans Helping Americans. The “Back to School Bash” is a one day event that annually hands out around 1,000 backpacks.

Coats for the Cold
Every year in early November, Appalachian Outreach hosts the “Coats for the Cold” drive. Partnerships involve local churches and businesses as well as Americans Helping Americans. Church groups across the United States send in hand made scarves and toboggans as donations. The general items to hand out include coats, gloves, blankets, scarves, thick socks, and toboggans. Each donor also has the opportunity to donate $20 or more to purchase 110 heaters. Altogether, this one day event includes over 200 volunteers. All participants gather in the Jefferson City Elementary School building to distribute thousands of clothing articles. “Coats for the Cold” serves residents in Jefferson, Grainger, Cocke, and Hamblen Counties.
